Today we walked to Rainbow Falls after catching the shuttle into town bright and early at 8:30am. We walked uphill out of the Tsunami Evacuation Zone and saw true rural Hilo on the way. The walk was uphill and a decent length but the falls made it worth it! We stopped, got photos and set back off again - there isn't much there apart from the Falls themselves. When we walked back to the centre we passed the library with the sacred rock outside and then the postal office. We grabbed a coffee (I also bought a sticker as a keep sake and postcard) at the Puna Chocolate Company and found some seeds to buy for home and handmade cards. I bought some chocolate coated macadamia nuts to try as this is what the Hilo district is famous for! There was a beautiful farmers market on Mama Street where individual stalls sell souvenirs and fresh fruit! We then grabbed a table at Pineapples on the cross roads where I had a great Hawaiian pineapple cider! Great food too - super fresh food - fish and salad. We then made our way back to the port via the beach trail and tsunami clock memorial.
